Five months ago I set off on a quest to find and create a more personal online learning experience for live events than what I was doing back then. Previously, if I wanted to give free trainings online, I created a simple Google+ Hangout On Air and invited people to RSVP on that page. Like the one below from April 2015 about my 10 favorite ways to monetize as in infopreneur:

Here’s the problem with that. You have no real way of capturing valuable information from the people who attend (like, say, their email address, name, and type of business/need) and the built-in chat feature is less than awesome–when you compare it to the super interactive way Periscope or other online chats operate. The “no email” issue began to be huge for me because I like to send homework (PDFs) before live events to help people get the full value out of the workshop.

Let’s move on to V2 (version 2).
If I wanted to deliver paid workshops online (live or pre-recorded), I used to create a Google+ Community that only paid participants could access, then I’d upload videos at a set schedule and hang around all day answering questions live. This was the model I started using about 5 months ago. I thought I’d arrived at a perfect solution.

This is how I used to do paid workshops online. Now I have a much better way to host live classes for free.

Whereas this model was more chatty and personal, it lacked organization and I soon found out that Google+ was not everyone’s favorite tool for community interactions. Booooooo.

So I started in on V3 of my quest. I began doing what most people do for their short webinars . . . integrate a Google+ Hangout On Air with LeadPages (a software that I truly love–you can see my bro and I using it below) or use Webinar Ninja (another very useful piece of software that’s simple to use for quick webinars). I can create signup pages, thank you pages, and live video pages with an embedded chat. Note: I’m still using both of these tools for shorter trainings–and for ones I don’t charge for.

P.S. Even though that might look like my brother Lemuel, I’m supposed to tell you that’s actually a guy named Len. P.P.S. Len is just a different persona my brother adopts during workshops to illustrate a point.

But, here’s the problem with these models for longer workshops like the one I’m doing next week on self-publishing your own book (that I’ve been talking about with you on Periscope for days now), you can’t host multiple videos on the same page at the same time easily. So if you plan to have an 11 o’clock session, a 1 o’clock training, and a 3 o’clock training for your workshop, you’d have to have 3 separate URLs, which can be confusing and doesn’t really allow for the convo to keep going in the same chat box easily.

Also, the tools listed above cost money. Further, with LeadPages your chat will be below your video typically, which means people have to stop watching to scroll down and type. Boooooo.

So now we arrive at V4 of all this. The version I recommend and use when I have lengthy online classes and workshops going on (especially ones with multiple separate trainings) that I want to provide a single workshop page URL for. Oh, and the best part about this version? It’s free.

How to Expand a Blog Post (or Series) into a Book

So, InfoBoMo (Infopreneur Book Month) has brought about some of the most interesting experiences, awesome new friendships and business alliances, and of course, some excellent resource shares and questions in the community.

As I was answering one particular question, my thought was:

Dang, I’m writing this woman a whole blog post. Don’t hate me.”

Then after I was done, my thought was:

Dang, I should make this a blog post. Other people probably have the same question.”

So, here we are, you and I . . . about to dive into: How do you turn a blog post series into a book? OR EVEN How do you turn a blog post into a book?

My friend, I do not have all the answers, and I’m sure there are multiple ways to go about it, but I can tell you what I’ve done in this situation in the hope that it helps.

When expanding on posts that already exist for free on the webs, I try to take a step back and look at the whole topic from the reader/customer perspective. This comes in the form of five questions you can ask yourself about your current post or series as well as five general idea-generating questions you can ask yourself to create an awesome chapter/content list for your book. You can download the worksheets below (just click on them) to help you work through and record your ideas from this post.

For the purposes of this post, let’s take for example a series you did on car maintenance for your “modern superwoman” blog. P.S. If it is a single post you are turning into a book, break it down into the main points/sections you made. Below, I assume it is a series, but you can change my list out for your post sections.

If you’ve perhaps been following along with my blog, reading the income + traffic reports I publish occasionally, then you already know a little bit about how I structure my business and earn a living. But, what I want to talk about with you today is the revelation that has really helped me in my first year of business. It may be something you already implement in your business or it may be something you want to explore more, and I hope I can help.

If you have a moment, I want to help you create a course (an epic “mini-course” to be more specific) that you can give away or sell to your audience, and I want to help you for free. Like seriously, I have a 20-page workbook and 5 training videos waiting for you, but I must start with the brief story of a time, long ago, when I created an entire mini-course in 12 hours. The story begins in the distant past known as . . . two days ago.

11 a.m. – I woke up // Don’t judge me, I got a late start.
11:15 a.m. – I remembered how I really want to create a quick, free Blog School this weekend to help people plan + create their blogs.
11:17 a.m. – I thought it would be fun to invite other friends across the globe to create their own short courses with me.
11:18 a.m. – I thought, “Maybe I can make it a bit of a challenge and post updates throughout the day.”
11:19 a.m. – Made up my mind and then posted a graphic announcing my plans on Instagram.

I started posting YouTube updates as I was creating my initial product (a blog school), which I still plan to finish soon, but then my path morphed a bit. I realized (somewhere in Hour 3 I think) that the mini course I was actually creating was a course on how to create mini courses. Yeah. It took me a minute to realize it. But see, #whathadhappenedwas:

I was working and posting videos and updates on one thing, but I constantly wanted to develop worksheets, resources, tips, and more for everyone else who was following along and creating their own mini courses.

Shocker, right? If you know me at all, then you know that I live to create and do adult homework. So the day I had so carefully planned out (translation: had not planned out at all really) morphed into the creation of a short course that I want you to be able to take for free.

How to create a mini course for your audience

So, what’s in this “Create a Course in 12 hours” workbook?

Blog Income Report: The Tools That Helped Me Earn $16,000 Last Month

Let’s talk for a moment here. It was like this: I was having a cold and snowy Thanksgiving last year (#TruthBeTold I forget what we’re supposed to be celebrating on most holidays, so I typically just work and eat more food than normal on these days) when my Internet friend emailed me.

She’d read one of my Blog Income Reports and was debating whether she should start sharing hers. I encouraged her to do so because I really think they can be inspiring, and helpful, and such great learning tools, and . . . then she told me how much she’d made that month.


Here was my immediate thought process, in the order my thoughts occurred. And don’t worry, the true inner dialogue is included below:

  1. This woman is a superstar.
  2. Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang Gina, you’ll never make over $20,000 in a month. (Also, I sounded like Martin, from the show named Martin, when I said this in my head.)
  3. Okay, okay, maybe one day I can make that much. But it’s like seven years out. And hopefully by then I’ll have convinced people to call me by my favorite nickname: Regick. (I blame this one on my love for Chronicles of Riddick, and I blame my love for that on . . . daaaaang Gina . . . there’s just no excuse for that.)
  4. Wait, why does it have to take me seven years? Sidenote: Buy the domain name to see if people will start calling me by my nickname.
  5. Hmm, what if I can do it sooner than seven years? No, no, silly Regick, that’s only for other people, not you.
  6. But hmm, what if I CAN do it sooner? You’re sounding like a crazy person Regick, but I like it.
  7. Know what? I can do it sooner.

And something crazy happened. byRegick, or byRegina, whatever you want to call it, made over $22K in December 2014 (and note: the report below is about January 2015). Not because I’m the most genius blogger (I’m just not), not because I had 20 million people visit my site (would that break the Internet?) . . . no, I reached that income goal because honestly, for the first time ever I believed and knew it was possible for a normal person like me. Knowing that my Internet friend, who is normal like us, could reach that level, made me acknowledge the possibility of it in my own life.

Why am I saying all of this? Because I really, really want you to read this report below and know that your goals are possible. The mere act of believing, in essence, gives us permission to go for our goals. It’s important to reach for them, not only for yourself and your family, but because your achievements will give other people “permission” in their own lives.

On Facebook the other day, I asked you if you liked seeing income reports from bloggers, and so many wonderful people said “Heck yes.”

I asked this question because amazing bloggers like Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income inspire me with their reports, which is why I started these back in April of 2014. People like Pat have always felt somewhat unreal to me, but they truly are totally normal, real-life people. So, here is the income report of another totally real-life person, who would take you salsa dancing, rock climbing, or tequila drinking if you were in Austin right now.

Oh, and, P.S. >> Since I live in Austin, Texas, I feel I should be honest with you. We like to embellish and dramatize when it comes to weather conditions. It was probably actually 75 degrees Fahrenheit on the cold + snowy Thanksgiving I referenced above (with .2 drops of rain). And no, I don’t know what that is in Celsius; sorry, we the people of America don’t have logical units of measurement.
